Ruth's Future

I don't remember how long ago it was that I asked Ruth what she wanted to be when she grew up.  Since we had just finished reading Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, I expected her to say teacher, like all the mice in the book. But without hesitation she said doctor.

Now, at the time thought this was fitting.  I had hoped that her having to go to so many doctors when she was a small child (GI, genetics doc, eye doctors, center for visually impaired) that maybe she would have a future in the medical field.  And each of those doctors (except for the original eye doc before we wised up and switched to Emory) has said that Ruth was a smart kid.

So when Brian asked her the other night if she wanted to help flush my line, I was only slightly surprised that she jumped at the chance.  Tonight she did all three with only minor help.  (this week is the first time we have had to flush the line since I have gone 7 days without going to clinic.)  What was the funniest was tonight as she was pushing the saline, Grayson was doing starfall on the computer and listening to one of the songs.  In the song it talks of Aiken Drum having spaghetti hair.  Ruth's head popped up and she got this crazy look on her face and said "spaghetti hair?" and started laughing.  She reminded me of so many nurses who draw blood and carry on conversations with other nurses seemingly without giving the task at hand one thought.

Brian is such a good daddy - I never would have thought to let Ruth do it.  But it really involved her and helped to take away the mystic of my cyborg (spelling) arm.

  1. That's awesome that Brian let her do that. Ruth sounds like she'd make an excellent doctor. You better start saving for med school! Ha ha ha.
